The trail itself is very easy, with very little elevation change. The main attraction of this hike is the beautiful scenery. It is a very popular hike and trail runners enjoy it tremendously. The trail is wide enough for two-way traffic, but there are areas where it narrows and hikers yield to those running/walking on the trail as well as hikers yield to horseback riders. When passing each other, simply smile and say hello!
The trail itself is about 3 miles in length, but there are many access points to it on either side of Las Ramblas Trailhead. You can easily extend the hike by 1-2 miles in either direction by accessing these points.
At the end of the trail, there is a covered bridge that marks the turnaround point of Las Ramblas Trailhead. This makes an excellent place to take pictures or just rest before heading back.
The 3.2-mile moderately trafficked trail to the La Rambla Trailhead in San Juan Capistrano, CA is ideal for all abilities and features spectacular wildflowers. The path has a variety of activities available and is open all year. Dogs are permitted on this route, but they must be kept on a leash.
The hike begins at the Las Ramblas Trailhead and ends at the O’Neill Regional Park parking lot. The trail crosses several paved roads, so stay on the trail or use caution when crossing the road. Some areas of the trail can be muddy or slippery when wet, so it’s recommended to wear sturdy shoes.
The north end of the trail offers an opportunity to extend your trip into O’Neill Regional Park. Just follow the trail through a gate in the fence and continue on to the park’s picnic area. The picnic area has restrooms, drinking water, basic camping facilities, and several picnic tables.
From here, you will have opportunities to extend your hike by exploring other trails that branch off from your current location in O’Neill Park, or you can return to Las Ramblas Trailhead by taking the same route you came in on.
Las Ramblas Trail is a short out and back hike in San Juan Capistrano. The trail is located in the upper Santa Ana River watershed and is an easy way to get away from the city. This is an excellent hike for families with kids, as it is only 0.8 miles round-trip with minimal elevation gain. The trail can be accessed from the end of Camino De Los Mares, which turns off of Ortega Highway about 4 miles north of I-5 near Lake Forest.
