The City of San Clemente is located in beautiful San Juan Capistrano and serves as an oasis for residents and visitors alike. The city was founded by Fred Hesse who originally named it Ortega. It was then renamed in 1918 by its second postmaster, Robert H. Hopkins, who felt that “San Clemente” had a better ring to it.
At the time, there were only two homes in the area. Today, the city serves over 32,000 residents in a land area of 4.2 square miles. The city’s boundaries include I-5 and Ortega Highway on the west side; Camino Capistrano on the east side; and Del Obispo on the south side. The northern boundary is shared with Dana Point, which is governed by the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

The city is named after Saint Clement and was established almost 100 years later on June 19, 1873, by tobacco growers from New Mexico led by William H. Spurgeon on land originally part of San Juan Capistrano. The spur line from San Diego to San Juan Capistrano was built in 1888 but removed three years later when the line from Colton to San Diego was completed.
